Main defects in teaching of geography at primary level and their removal are given below:
1. Defects in Curriculum:
The curriculum in geography at primary school stage suffers from various defects and draw-backs.
To remove these defects and draw-backs the curriculum should be framed in a scientific manner and it should be such that students feel interested in it.
The curriculum should be environment centered and should be such that it could be finished by the teacher in the prescribed time.
The present syllabus is not the one framed scientifically and the teacher finds it difficult to finish it up in the prescribed time. The text-books and syllabus are also not free from being cumbersome.
All this leads to loss of interest of the child in the subject of geography. In the present syllabus due emphasis is not given to practical work and observation.
To remove these defects and drawbacks the subjects-matter and text books should be organized in such a way that students feel interested because interest is very important for proper learning.
2. Defects in Teaching
In primary schools the teaching aids are not available and it is the basic cause of defective teaching in schools. The teaching of geography is bound to suffer in the absence of teaching aids.
The primary school teacher is also at a disadvantage to arrange tours and excursions. Tours and excursions occupy a very important place in teaching of geography.
For a teacher to be successful he should have a proper knowledge of the practical aspects of geography and should be trained to handle the students properly. However most of the teachers suffer from this defect which is responsible for the loss of interest of the student in the subject of geography.
To remove this defect tours and excursions be given a proper place in school curriculum. Teacher should but in his best in arranging and planning such tours. He should plan them in such a way that the students feel really interested in the subject.
