In middle latitudes, the weather and precipitation are largely controlled by travelling extra- tropical cyclones and fronts. These give plenty of rain in all seasons and in most places except for the regions located in the far interiors of the Asian and North American continents.

The equatorial zone is generally an area of abundant precipitation (over 200 centimeters annually). This high level of precipitation is due to the equatorial belt’s high temperature, high humidity and highly unstable air.

Precipitated moisture falling on the ground takes various forms which depend on the following conditions: (a) the temperature at which condensation takes place, (b) the conditions encountered as the particles pass through the air, (c) the type of clouds and their heights from the ground, and (d) the processes generating precipitation.

The Coalescence’ process of rain making was discovered by E. G. Boven of Australia. This process is applicable only to those clouds which do not extend beyond the freezing level.

There are certain processes in nature which are capable of dissipating the existing fogs. Petterssen has classified them into three categories: (a) condensation and sublimation, (b) vertical mixing, and (c) heating.

Difference terms are used to indicate fogs formed under different conditions. Some of the fog names are described below:-

H.C. Willett, for the first time, classified fogs on the basis of important fog producing processes. His classification not only gave an insight into the physical processes bringing about the fog, but it also provided the basis of fog forecasting.

Fog and cloud present very little difference in respect of their appearance and structure, because both of them are a visible aggregate of microscopically small water droplets floating in the atmosphere.

Condensed moisture occurs in various forms. This is due to variations in the amount of humidity in the air, in its movements and turbulence, and in its temperature and rate of cooling.

In order to get the process of condensation started, it is essential that there should be an abundant supply of microscopic dust particles in the air.

Condensation by cooling is produced by four different processes: (a) cooling by expansion, (b) conduction of heat from the air to a cold surface, (c) direct radiation-cooling of the air, and (d) mixing of warm and cold masses of saturated air.

Rate of evaporation is greater over the oceans than over the continents.

The moisture content of the atmosphere in any locality can be measured in a number of ways. The following expressions are used to denote the actual moisture content of the atmos­phere: absolute humidity, specific humidity, relative humidity and mixing ratio.
