The Vedic system of education very much emphasized the importance of discipline in the attainment of knowledge. This, however, was self discipline. In fact it was self-control which was realised by observance of rules of the Brahmacharya Ashram.

The environments of different individuals are very much different from one another and so also their effects, but the influence of environment on personality can roughly be divided into that of home; school and society. All these three play an important part in the development of personality.

The word personality has been derived from the Latin word ‘Persona’, which was the mask which Greek actors wore while acting. This, however, is not the meaning taken in the modern word personality.

Individual differences should be recognized in all effective educational programmes. Education should make every individual capable of making his unique contribution to the society.

There are several factors that contribute to our personality. These factors have received greater or less importance at the hands of different psychologists. Here we shall discuss some of the important elements. These elements generally stated are:

The individual differences in respect of intelligence were not known before 1900. It was assumed that intelligence was equal in all pupils and there were only a few who were abnormal when differences were recognized.

Heredity is one of the causes of mental retardation. The mental retardation factor of parents also affects the generation.

The following brief description may serve to make individual differences a simple concept that can easily be grasped. Individuals are seen differing in considerable measure in respect of their general intelligence. It is not possible to send to schools children with an intelligence quotient of below 50.

No two pupils are alike. They differ from each other in hundred and one respects. They differ in age, sex, hereditary potential, intelligence, achievement, interests, and aptitudes, needs physical, social, emotional and developmental.

There are many diseases which are inherited. T. B., epilepsy etc. are generally inherited. If parents suffer from these diseases, their children also suffer from these diseases they are unable to adjust themselves to the accepted pattern of behaviour.

It is important to detect the potential delinquents early to treat them before they become problems for the society. Public awareness regarding delinquency had not been fully aroused in India.

Juvenile delinquency is one of the most serious problems of our times. Everybody has his or her idea of what delinquency is but many of these concerns do not take us anywhere. As such, we need a clear-cut definition.

The causes of delinquency are several like: 1. Physical causes, 2. Psychological causes, 3. Economic causes, 4. Educational causes, 5- Political causes.
