By this we mean more than one promotion during the course of the year. If a child shows an extraordinary achievement in own class, he may be given a double promotion. The aim of this promotion is to place the gifted student.

The possible causes for turning a child into backward may be divided into two broad categories – internal, lying within the individual and/or external, lying in his environment.

The term ‘exceptional’ is defined in different ways by different people. Some refer to very bright child as an exceptional child while some refer the dull child as an exceptional child. Many times the term ‘exceptional’ is accepted to mean the handicapped child.

Individuals differ in intelligence. No two children can be quite similar in intelligence or in any other mental trait just as no two individuals can be quite the same is any physical feature.

Individuals differ as much in mental features as they do in physical aspects. In fact, no two individuals are alike physically or mentally in the world. This difference is due to heredity as well as environmental influences.

A test is reliable only when the results remain constant whatever the environment or on different occasions.

For certain vocations, we need a certain level of intelligence. That is known by tests of intelligence. Intelligence tests are very useful in educational guidance, i.e., the child can select the subject in the light of his I.Q. other than his aptitude.

This is the most comprehensive model taking into consideration all possible aspects of intellectual activity. This is the only theory which considers creativity (Divergent Production or thinking) along with intelligence.

The English Charles Spearman (1904), who was the inventor and first user of factor analytic methods, developed a two-factor theory of intelligence from his own experimental work.

Operational approach is important to understand the concept of intelligence in clear and definite terms. Scientific terms are not defined in terms of isolation but by stating the observable conditions under which the statement is true or false. Instead of defining the word itself it should be defined under conditions in which it occurs.

Let us examine the effectiveness of certain ways and means which school teachers use for motivating their children. Some of these are punishment, rewards, and prizes, success, approval and disapproval, praise and blame.

Motivation has been defined as impulsion to do something to satisfy a need. The stronger the need, the stronger the impulsion and stronger the motivation Till the need is not satisfied the person remains in the state of tension.

Every teacher daily faces a number of behaviour problems. For the explanation of these problems, he has to turn to psychology of motivation. This is a great problem for teachers, parents, administrators and those interested in the improvement of performance and learning of people.
