Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri was the second Prime Minister of India. He was one of the makers of India. He was a great patriot.

His Birth and Parentage:

He was born in 1904 in Mughal Sarai. He belonged to a Kayasth family. His father was a teacher. His father died when he was only one and half years. He was brought and educated by his maternal grand father.

His Political Career:

When he was a boy he was drawn towards the national struggle for freedom. He was a born patriot. Love for the country was in his blood. He took active part in the first non-cooperation movement of India. He left his studies. He went to jail in 1920.


Next year he came out of jail. He was married in 1927 at the age of 23. He became permanent member of the servants of people society. He took active part in the affairs of the city congress. He was elected the general secretary of the U.P. Provincial Committee in 1935. In 1937 he fought election for the U.P. Assembly. During this time he took active part in the various movements for the freedom of the country.

He worked as Home Minister of UP from 1946 to 1951. His selfless love for duty, enthusiasm and fearlessness impressed national leaders like Jawahar Lal Nehru. In 1951 he was elected as the General Secretary of the all India Congress Committee. He was elected to Rajya Sabha in 1952. He was made the Union Minister for Transport and Railways. In 1958 he took over as Minister for Commerce and Industry and became the Minister of Home Affairs in 1961. In 1963 he gave up his office under Kamraj Plan.

His work as the Prime Minister:

After the death of Shri Jawahar Lal Nehru Shastriji became the Prime Minister of India. He worked in the capacity of the Prime Minster and the Foreign Minister of the country for about 18 months. He began his carrier under serious disadvantages. During the short period he showed that he possessed extraordinary power to face every problem bravely. He put down all the undesirable elements with strong hand. He proved himself man of iron will. Country was suffering from corruption and nepotism. Shastriji gave us a cleaner and healthier administration. He suspended many corrupt officials and dismissed many of them.

In September 1965 he faced undeclared war with Pakistan. He faced the enemy with iron determination. The army was given a free hand. It crossed International Border. The enemy was given a crushing defeat. The Tashkant Pact is his great achievement.



Shri Shastriji died at Tashkant in the night soon after singing the historic pact. The nation mourned his death. In his death, the nation lost a great and worthy son. May his should rest in peace in heaven! India will never forget his unselfish service.
