Paragraph on Status of Women in India

Women in ancient India were held in high esteem. But with the passage of time, their status deteriorated. Polygamy, dowry, sati and female infanticide came into practice. Sati was banned in 1829 by Lord William Bentinck. At present rape, dowry deaths, female foeticide etc. have become a common affair. Certain laws have been passed by the government for the safety and empowerment of women. 33% seats are reserved for women in the Panchayati Raj system. Women must come forward and fight against exploitation and for their rights. A nation’s progress and prosperity can be judged by the way it treats its womenfolk. Men must recognize and accept the fact that women are equal partners if life.
